SVG Favorite For First Repeat Winner in Chicago
It's all fun and games until one of the top road racers on the planet crashes the party. That's exactly what Shane Van Gisbergen, better known as "SVG", did back in 2023, the debut for NASCAR in the streets of Chicago. In his first cup series race, in a car he's never driven, SVG brought a ton of speed to the race thanks to Trackhouse Racing, leading just nine laps en route to his first victory.
It was a different story in 2024. Instead of crashing the party it took all-but 24 laps for Chase Briscoe to lock up his tires in the rain and send SVG into the wall, crashing his car and ending his day early. There'll be redemption on his mind this year, now competing full-time in the Cup Series already with a playoff spot secured following his win in Mexico City.
Starting From Pole in 2025
Now in 2025, SVG set a blistering pace on the streets of Chicago and will lead the field from the pole. There's no question why he's the man to beat.
Top Threats to Win in the Grant Park 165
While SVG is the top threat to win at any road course, it won't come easy. He'll have a number of competitive cars fighting for the win, most notably the likes of Tyler Reddick (starting 4th) and Kyle Larson (starting 14th). Both Reddick and Larson have finished in the top 5 on this course in the two years the series has ran it, and both have multiple road course wins in the bank for their career. Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron is not only one of the most consistent cars week-to-week but always a threat to win on a road course.
Another few names to watch out for are Alex Bowman, Michael McDowell, and Ty Gibbs. Bowman is the defending winner of the Chicago Street Course race while McDowell and Gibbs are two of three drivers to finish in the top 10 in both races. Had either driver brought more speed to the track this year their odds for the Chicago Street Course would look better. While Bowman is still in contention to make the postseason on points alone, Gibbs and McDowell need a win if they want to make the NASCAR Playoffs in 2025.
